2025-26 Children's Creative Dance Classes with Jennifer McGowan • Register • View Cart •

Creative Dance - Mixed Ages 3-7 (must be 3 as of 9/1/25)
Saturdays, 9:00-9:40 am (Upstairs)
This class is designed with open-ended dance activities to support a variety of age levels and emphasizes the joy of movement. Explore dancing with scarves, rhythm instruments, parachute play, story dance, yoga, and much more! Dance skills and movement vocabulary are taught with a focus on body awareness and confidence in movement.   There will be an end-of-year performance held in May 2026, giving dancers the chance to share all we have learned throughout the year.*

Creative Dance - Ages 4-6 (must be 4 as of 9/1/25)
Wednesdays, 4:30-5:10 pm (Upstairs)
Dance skills and movement vocabulary are taught with an emphasis on body awareness and confidence in movement. Create beautiful improvisational dances as you learn and explore the tools of dance - technique, design, rhythm, flow, and creativity. In addition, you will develop music appreciation as you dance to the many musical rhythms, learn problem-solving skills, and create solo and group dances expressing the uniqueness of each dancer. Yoga postures and stories and relaxation techniques are integrated into the class to connect body, mind, and spirit. There will be an end-of-year performance held in May 2025, giving dancers the chance to share all we have learned throughout the year.*

Creative Modern Dance - Grades 2-5
Wednesdays, 5:15-6:10 pm (Upstairs)
Modern and ballet dance technique is formally introduced with an emphasis on self-expression, creativity, and fun. The class is designed to develop rhythmic, coordination, and creative skills necessary in the art of making dances. Through yoga, dance exercises and combinations you will develop strength, flexibility, posture, and balance. Then explore moving to a variety of music as you create your own dances. Develop an understanding of dance appreciation as you dance amongst a group of friends who respect and admire each other's unique ways of moving. Yoga postures and stories and relaxation techniques are integrated into the class to connect body, mind, and spirit. There will be an end-of-year performance held in May 2026, giving dancers the chance to share all we have learned throughout the year.*

Creative Modern Dance - Grades 6+
Mondays, 5:15-6:10 pm (Upstairs)
Students learn the craft of choreography as they develop dance vocabulary, original movement, and evaluation techniques to express a wide range of ideas. Explore a variety of dance techniques including modern, ballet, and jazz. Explore moving to rhythmic patterns and learn dance combinations as well as create your own compositions to the various styles of classical, jazz, pop, world, new age, and lyrical music. Explore Yoga flows and relaxation techniques. All levels are welcome. There will be an end-of-year performance held in May 2026, giving dancers the chance to share all we have learned throughout the year.*

Dancers Workshop Performing Group Grades 3+
Rehearsals held on Mondays, 4:15-5:10 pm
The Dancers Workshop is a performing dance company of young people who share a love of dance and a desire to bring the art of dance to the community. Dance company members perform at several community events and festivals throughout the school year, which may include performances at nursing homes, community centers, local town festivals, and schools, as well as family performances. In addition to signing up for Dancers Workshop and attending the weekly rehearsals, dancers must register for and attend the creative modern dance class for their age level.  Before committing, please inquire for details about this special group at info@creative-dance.com to see if it is a good fit for your child. *Please note: 9/8/25, 9/15/25, 1/5/26 rehearsals will meet from 4:15-6:10 pm. All other rehearsals will meet from 4:15-5:10.


 
*** Performance Information:
Each year in May we have an afternoon of dance performance, which dancers are invited to participate in.  Performing gives dancers the chance to share all they have learned throughout the year.  This is an informal performance in which the dancers are all involved in creating the dances and get to show the joy of movement.  Putting on a performance is an expensive endeavor. I try to keep the costs reasonable as much as possible. There is a $30/per student performance fee payable to the instructor on the first class of the spring session which goes directly towards the rental fee of the auditorium and insurance. Costumes are kept to a minimum using clothes from home, borrowing from my costume collection, or buying simple costumes (a maximum of $20 or usually a lot less).  Families attend for free—there is no ticket charge or other hidden fees. Each year’s performance has a special theme. It is a fun way to celebrate our year together and I am there every step of the way to help dancers feel confident and comfortable on stage.
 

All Dance Classes are taught by Jennifer McGowan:
Jennifer has danced since her early childhood years with extensive training in Classical Ballet. She began teaching at the age of 14 and then went on to further her studies at Skidmore College where she received her B.S. degree in Dance, with a minor in Early Childhood Education. In addition to ballet, she has studied many forms of dance including Creative Dance, Character Dance, Bharata Natyam (Classical Indian Dance), Tap, Modern, Jazz, Ballet, Music and Acting for Dancers, Choreography, and Improvisation. She is also certified to teach Creative Kids Yoga for children ages 2-12. As a teacher, Jennifer creates a safe environment for students to be themselves while challenging them to discover their full potential. By encouraging students to work together and learn from one another, she fosters mutual respect and a strong sense of community. Jennifer started the Creative Dance Center in 1995. She has been sharing her knowledge and love of dance with children for over thirty years and is dedicated to providing quality dance and yoga education for all ages. When she is not dancing, she enjoys spending time with her family.
